Chain of Hope received a call from a distraught family member, who told us that a relative of hers was keeping 2 blk. lab mix puppies in a filthy chicken coop in KCK for “guard” dogs. I don’t think a dog can guard all of your stuff if it’s kept inside a chicken coop, but what do I know? The old lady had had a stroke and no one else in the family wanted anything to do with the dogs, so they kept them in this filthy, disgusting, dark chicken coop. A couple of the volunteers went over to check it out and it was pretty horrible. Before they even got close to it, they could smell it. It reeked of feces and urine. They peered into the dark chicken coop and saw 2 adorable, 6 mo. old blk. lab mix puppies, standing in inches of feces. They were caked in feces and they wanted out of there so bad. The people signed them over to Chain of Hope and the girls loaded up the adorable puppies, whose lives just got a whole lot better. They were siblings, a male and a female. We named them June and Johnny.
The first thing that happened to them is they went straight to the bath tub at Chain of Hope. They were so dirty and stinky. June was matted very badly with feces. It was so sad that they had had to live in those conditions. Thank God one of the family members cared enough to make some phone calls and find help through Chain of Hope.
Michelle and her family that fostered Lexi offered to foster one of these kids. They came down and ended up taking June home with them and she is doing great! She’s had a couple of good baths, a hair trim and a really good brushing and she is beautiful! She is coming out of her shell. Her foster family has taken her to doggie daycare to help socialize her some more. She is a happy, grateful, wonderful girl-and such a cutie!
Johnny is at Chain of Hope, doing very well, too. He has learned his name, how to kennel and what toys and raw hides are. He loves to hang around with Alexa, the little girl we trapped in our own front yard (blog from 12-7-11). They go out in the backyard together and run around and play and play. He is very loving and loves to please. He always has a smile on his face. He and June are so happy now. June weighs about 25 lbs. and Johnny weighs around 35-40 lbs. They are both super dogs. Love the names Johny and June… Johny looks like Tyler (my dog who passed) thank you for saving these sweet babies you guys. Just curious, did AC know about this? Keeping two dogs in a chicken coop is (among other things) disgustingly cruel and inhumane. Wondering if AC did anything or if any charges were pending. Probably not. I’ve been in the world of animal rescue long enough to know nothing happens…THANK YOU and God bless you for saving these babies!!

God bless the work you do. you all do an amazing thing for these animals. i would like to foster dogs when i can, but right now I have a 12 year old lab mix male that does not warm up to other dogs. Hopefully someday i can help, for now I just make donations.

June is a wonderful little girl and we are so happy to foster her! She is learning some commands like sit and she knows to go in her kennel when we are leaving and at night. She is learning to play with our other dogs and is very curious about our cat. Her favorite thing is to follow us around and doesn’t want to be left behind.
